Clean sweep of lost deposits for Liverpool BNP
The voters have spoken – and they’ve told Liverpool BNP where to get off in no uncertain terms.
The BNP averaged a humiliating 1.82% in the three Liverpool seats they constested, losing their deposits in every one. As usual, the BNP in Liverpool performed WORSE than the party nationally.
In Wavertree they were 7th out of 8 candidates (by ONE vote) and only managed a humiliating 150 votes (0.4% of the poll). Voters clearly weren’t fooled by ex-soldier Steve McEllenborough and his feeble attempt to present a respectable front for this racist party.
In Riverside the BNP could only muster 706 votes (1.82%) – a long way from the 22,998 of the winning candidate. In a rare venture into south Liverpool, the BNP got the result they feared – a resounding NO!
In Walton, the BNP’s main target seat in Liverpool, and a constituency in which the party fought several council seats, just 3.22% of those who voted chose fascism. That’s 1104 people too many, and we’ll continue to work to win even them away from the BNP, but this dismal effort was the best the BNP could do in a city which has clearly rejected them.
Liverpool BNP’s Steve Greenhalgh, who replaced the too-publicly-racist Gary Aronsson in Knowsley, also lost his deposit, getting a mere 4% of the vote.
In Bootle, another area where the BNP had high hopes, their candidate polled a woeful 2.3% (942 votes).
Overall, in the five seats that the BNP contested locally, their percentage was 2.42%. The electoral road appears to be closing for these cretins – and the clock is clearly ticking on Nick Griffin’s status as an MEP, if not his leadership of the party.
Liverpool Anti-Fascists wish to thank everyone who helped with our campaign to stop the BNP from gaining ground in Liverpool. A lot of hard work was done, with thousands of leaflets being delivered in areas that fascists were targeting. As in previous elections, this tried and tested method paid off – there is no alternative to getting out into communities and giving working-class people clear arguments as to why the BNP and fascism are their sworn enemies.
We will continue to keep the pressure on the BNP and urge all anti-fascists to remain vigilant and active.
