Anti-Jubilee Protester Set Alight By Zieg Heiling Boneheads in Newcastle
A teenager was taken to hospital when his hair was set alight by English Defence League supporters who attacked an anti-Jubilee party in Newcastle.
The 18-year-old, who does not wish to be identified, was hit by a burning firework thrown during the clash at Grey’s Monument between more than 100 English Defence League and National Front members and anti-Jubliee protestors.
Footage captured by our reporters show firecrackers and missiles thrown into the crowd, fights, and EDL members making apparent Nazi salutes.
The teenager was taken to Newcastle Freeman Hospital for treatment to burns suffered when the explosive hit his face and landed in his hood.
He was with friends at a “Stuff The Jubilee Party” which was organised on Facebook and due to start at midday.
Members of the EDL carrying banners arrived shortly beforehand.
A line of around 25 officers separated the two groups.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said no arrests were made but that they were investigating.
The spokesman said: “There was one incident of two fireworks going off among a crowd of people. One man sustained a slight injury.”
One shopper said: “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I saw a couple of fights and missiles being thrown into a crowd.
