The far right MEP, 86, was convicted of minimising the Holocaust over similar remarks in 1999

Controversial: Jean-Marie Le Pen’s comments are certain to incite fury

The Nazi gas chambers were dismissed as a “detail of history” by a far-right politician today.

The death camps where millions of Jews were killed were no worse than other horrors of World War Two , said French National Front founder Jean-Marie Le Pen.

But the MEP, 86, convicted of minimising the Holocaust in 1999 over a similar remark, said: “What I said corresponds to what I think.

“The gas chambers were a detail of the war, unless we admit that the war was a detail of the gas chambers!’

During an interview on BFM TV in Paris, Mr Le Pen added: “I challenge anyone to name an anti-Semitic phrase in my political life.”

His remarks will reignite criticism of the party, now led by his daughter Marine.
