Campaigners plan response to far right rally
An NF demonstration
FAR-RIGHT groups converging on Wigan town centre this weekend have been sent a clear message that they are not welcome.
Borough police are bracing themselves for a demonstration by neo-Nazi group National Action and the Evening Post understands that National Front will also be holding their own rally.
A counter protest has been planned by several trade union movements and anti-fascist groups in response.
Visitors to the Wigan Diggers Festival last weekend spoke of their plans to counteract the far-right rally.
And prominent screenwriter Jimmy McGovern, a guest speaker at the Diggers event, told the crowd: “I come from a family of Irish immigrants and we were welcomed with open arms here and I’m very grateful for that. I really don’t agree with these groups.”
National Action planned a racist “white man march” in Liverpool last month that was thwarted by protestors and several NA members were ushered onto trains bound for Wigan.
A National Front leaflet viewed by the Evening Post states a “demonstration against immigration” is planned on Saturday.
